Autumn brings colder temperatures and more unpredictable rain, which can make exterior sealing jobs harder.
So, can you still apply sealant when the weather turns? It depends on the product and the conditions.
Can You Apply Silicone in Cold Weather?
Temperature matters when applying silicone.
As general guidance, Soudal states that the ambient temperature and the surface temperature should be above +5°C when applying sealants. Individual products have their own application temperature ranges, so always check the technical data sheet before starting.
Can You Apply Silicone in the Rain?
For standard silicone, don't apply it in the rain.
Soudal advises that the surface should generally be clean, dry and free from dust and grease, and specifically states that silicone sealant should not be used in the rain.
It's also worth remembering that a silicone being weather resistant once cured doesn't necessarily mean it can be applied to a wet surface.
Are There Sealants for Wet Weather?
Yes — some specialist products are designed for more challenging conditions.
For example, Soudal All Weather Sealant is designed for repairs including leaks in gutters and drainpipes and can be used for emergency repairs even in rain. Its current technical data sheet gives an application temperature of +5°C to +30°C.
Other hybrid products may also allow application to damp surfaces, but always check the instructions for the exact product you're using.
Check Before You Start
Before an autumn sealing job, check:
- The weather forecast
- The application temperature stated for the product
- Whether the surface needs to be dry
- Whether the sealant is suitable for the materials and location
A few minutes checking the product instructions can save you having to redo the job later.
